Theory of Change
Our Theory of Change is based on the understanding that long-term, sustainable change is only possible when you tap into the talents and gifts of an individual. We focus on awakening the youth’s talents so they can re-enter society from a place of strength and passion. Our innovative classroom-based curriculum is rooted in experiential learning—the youth learn by developing marketable concepts, leading teams, collaborating with industry leaders and launching creative projects.
Second, we understand that homelessness and poverty cannot be solved solely within the public sector. As such, the Reciprocity Foundation operates as a “bridging organization” that helps youth connect to creative professionals, leading corporations and academic institutions as partners on their journey to building a meaningful career.
Third, we believe that one of the root causes of chronic homelessness is related to one’s isolation from society. As such, our curriculum is co-taught by industry professionals who mentor and coach the youth throughout their transition from homelessness to independence. These individuals also form the youth’s core network as they advance their career and educational goals.
Fourth, we believe that sustainable change is possible when an integral approach is employed. As such, we offer programming that encompasses professional development and personal well-being as equally important elements of a successful future.
Our pedagogy links the Creativity Economy with social responsibility. The Reciprocity faculty and curriculum teach the youth to assume a leadership role in creating sustainable and socially responsible enterprises.
Finally, we lead advocacy efforts to address structural imbalances in the system (i.e. access to opportunity). We work to inspire the private sector to play an active role in eliminating youth poverty and homelessness.
