In 2007, the Reciprocity Foundation opened the first-ever, holistic center for homeless youth in New York City—a space where youth can create original films and music, meditate and practice yoga, learn to cook vegetarian meals and to work with holistic health practitioners.

Our center is open 5 days a week and staffed with qualified counselors/coaches, media producers, holistic health practitioners, meditation and yoga teachers, business leaders, artists and vegetarian chefs. To become a volunteer at our center, please contact us.

Career Innovation Lab

Every young person needs a space in which they can tell their own stories—using images, film, music and words. In the Career Innovation Lab, youth learn how to write, shoot and edit media using cutting-edge software on Mac workstations. Filmmakers and producers from top media companies teach classes and help youth to organize on-location film shoots.

Meditation Room

The Meditation Room is an inter-faith space for the practice of mindfulness and reflection. Each week, youth can participate in a guided meditation session, a contemplative discussion group or a talk given by a leading teacher. Restorative yoga classes will also be hosted in this space.

Whole Person Kitchen

Learning to take care of your body is an important part of transforming your life.  In the Whole Person kitchen, youth learn the fundamentals of nutrition, food preparation and vegetarian cooking. Chefs and nutritionists lead hands-on sessions in the kitchen—and the fridge and pantry will be regularly stocked with healthy foods that involve minimal preparation.

Holistic Health Space

Many homeless youth suffer from mental illness or chronic stress; roughly 15% of our students are HIV+. The Holistic Health Room is a place where holistic health practitioners can practice massage, reiki, acupuncture and lead holistic health counseling sessions.

Learning Center

The Learning Center is the place where homeless youth meet, dialogue and learn from a diverse array of filmmakers, educators, designers, social entrepreneurs, business leaders and spiritual practitioners who lead hands-on seminars, teach and facilitate discussion.
